PIRANHA DD

Ok let me start this one off by saying that David Hasselhoff is completely awesome. He won me over years ago when it became apparent to me that no one was laughing harder at David Hasselhoff than, well, David Hasselhoff. My hat’s off to him for that very reason.

Mr. Hasselhoff carries over that self-deprecating humor to PIRANHA DD (originally titled PIRANHA 3DD for theatrical release), playing himself, as a “guest lifeguard” at The Big Wet Water Park which, as you can surmise, becomes rife with mutant piranhas. Just before the action starts, you hear the Hoff mutter to himself, “Welcome to Rock Bottom”. Gotta love this guy!

Kudos also to Gary Busey, Clu Gulager and a dead, farting cow for their all-too-brief appearances at the beginning of the movie.

Then we have the magnificent Ving Rhames, reprising his role as the now-disabled deputy sheriff first seen in PIRANHA 3D. He lost his legs to the piranhas in that film, so now he’s here, in a wheelchair, receiving therapy to conquer his fear of the water. He conquers it, alright, and becomes the badass Mofo that we are used to seeing him as on screen. Oh, and he puts on the baddest prosthetic leg devices EVER! A big salute to Mr. Rhames for maintaining his movie tough guy image here but still letting that teddy bear quality he has shine through, much like the late Michael Clarke Duncan had.

David Koechner (pronounced “Keckner” as he points out during one of the disc’s extra features) plays Chet, the sleazy “51%” owner (to his stepdaughter’s “49%” ownership) of “The Big Wet Waterpark”. This makes Chet the controlling interest in the business and as such it allows him to veto any concern his stepdaughter has about piranhas being able to access drains in the swimming pool.

And so, the little (and not-so-little) buggers DO manage to bust through the drains and begin eating some of the naked – but “water certified” – strippers who are floating in the pool. When you get a look at some of these gals, you will certainly understand the “double D” in the title PIRANHA DD.

As with most cinematic sleaze-meister entrepreneurs, Chet does get his just desserts, but not in the direct way you would think. His end is another of the funny visuals in the movie. Another is a reamjob, of sorts, that one of the park employees gets from a lone piranha. Guess that takes care of the poor guy’s hemorrhoid problem(s), huh?

John Gulager (son of Clu?) directs here with humor and style. There are the requisite flashes of bimbo breasts and all that so you’ve got somethin’ for everyone here.

What I love about this movie is that it never takes itself too seriously. A bloody comedy? Yes, it’s definitely that and in a nod to the first film there’s even a disattached penis sight gag.

One of the extra features is called “The Hofftastic World of David Hasselhoff”. It’s endearing when Mr. Hasselhoff refers to himself in the third person here. When Bob Dole referred to himself as “Bob Dole” all the time, it was just annoying. The Hoff can get away with anything because, well, he’s the Hoff.

PIRANHA DD is well done, fun and humorous. What more can one ask for?

On Blu-Ray and DVD from Dimension Films.

NAZIS AT THE CENTER OF THE EARTH

NAZIS AT THE CENTER OF THE EARTH. Hmmm. Could have been also been called THEY SAVED HITLER’S DIODODES or ROBO-FUHRER. Not really giving anything away by doing my own version of retitling this movie because some of it was already given away as I was doing research on it.

So, yes, Adolf (of sorts) makes his entrance during the latter half of the film. Not too surprising since one of his most infamous henchmen and supporters, Dr. Josef Mengele (pictured on the back of the DVD cover), runs the underground compound located slightly below somewhere in the Antarctic in this epic.

Jake Busey, son of Gary Busey (a fave of mine), is the only star here I recognized or knew anything about. The rest of them I don’t recall ever seeing before.

Christopher K. Johnson chews the scenery up (ala Christoph Waltz in INGLORIOUS BASTARDS) as Dr. Mengele, although it’s doubtful that Johnson’s performance will garner him an Oscar nod for Best Supporting Actor.

Make no mistake, this is NOT a zombie film – well, not in the “traditional” sense of being a zombie film. If there’s any flesh-eating going on, I didn’t see any by the undead Nazis (unless it was implied), but instead by a virus.

That, however, should not deter you from seeing this. NAZIS AT THE CENTER OF THE EARTH does contain a few surprises, although you can basically tell from the get-go who’s aligned with whom in the storyline.

Mind-blowing twists in the story is something I like (a lot) and there are a few here. As you can see from the DVD insert above, there is a Nazi UFO launched and a funny, almost-Mexican Standoff in the snows of the Antarctic

Be sure and sit (or forward) through the credits for the little tag at the end. No, it doesn’t appear to be setting things up for a sequel, but instead is mining one more laugh from a climactic scene. You’ll know which one I mean when you see it. And see it you must!

Good gore effects and a few “I don’t believe I just f*ck*n’ saw that” moments. It’s another fun entry from the folks at “The Asylum”.

Where to find at your local stores? Well, try Wal-Mart.

At my hometown Wal-Mart, they put out the new DVD titles on Tuesdays and there’s usually a small assortment of what I call “effed up” movies (this is NOT a slam; I happen to LOVE these kinds of films). They’re usually sold at bargain prices (this one was 10 bucks), so do yourself a favor and skip over those crappy Reese Witherspoon and Robert Pattinson movies (which seem to breed like rabbits), and go for the bizarre ones. Like NAZIS AT THE CENTER OF THE EARTH.

You can thank me later.

GINGERDEAD MAN 2: THE PASSION OF THE CRUST

Again, thanks and praises go out to the wonderful, lovely Tina Buckner for hipping me to this movie’s existence. We experienced the wonders of the first film together but have not, to date, been able to congregate and screen this one. I watched it on my own on the evening of 3/9/11 and then texted her about it afterwards. Tina’s anxious to see it, no doubt.

Full Moon Studios apparently decided to do a “movie within a movie” type of scenario with PASSION OF THE CRUST. The action takes place at “Cheatum”, a run-down, seat-of-the-pants type movie company. Cheatum is specifically known (and celebrated) for its cheap, knock-off grade Z pictures – like SPACE SPANKERS 2015. During the filming of one of their latest epics, the Gingerdead Man runs around, largely unnoticed, killing people with a butcher knife of some kind. It gives new meaning to the term “cookie cutter”.

One person is electrocuted anally by a curling iron, though, which is inserted by our favorite perverted little cookie. It’s ok, though; I’m sure that even after death the victim’s butt hair remained properly curled without the need of hairspray.

Although he was in the first movie, Gary Busey apparently decided to take a pass on being in this one. Or perhaps they couldn’t get him out of a coma long enough to do it. The voice of the Gingerdead Man here is John Vulich.

The in-joke casting coup here, I think, is Michelle Bauer. A former Penthouse Pet of the Month way back when – and one of the stars of HOLLYWOOD CHAINSAW HOOKERS - Ms. Bauer shows up as an ex- soft core porn star who is relegated nowadays to being a “hanger on”. She winds up providing some sweet treat catering (read into that what you will) to the film crew. Without any real explanation, the Gingerdead Man hitches a ride in her donut box (no, that is NOT a metaphor) to begin wreaking havoc on the movie set.

This movie has many funny moments, including parodies of the Full Moon Studio’s own “demonic toys” line. There are dolls like “Hemorrhoid”, “Shit-For-Brains” (so called for good reason) and “Dildo” which come to life in the film’s climax (no pun intended) to help fight the Gingerdead Man.

If you don’t mind the absurdity of it all, you will probably enjoy PASSION OF THE CRUST. However, if you can’t stand weird films – or if you don’t have a sense of humor about them – this will NOT be your cup of tea.

Oh goodie: the next movie in the series is to be called GINGERDEAD MAN 3: SATURDAY NIGHT CLEAVER.
