Despite what it says on the back cover of the DVD insert, this movie is not all that gripping. There IS mayhem and mass murder, though, but you’ll find that in just about any Sam Peckinpah film (i.e., THE WILD BUNCH).
Warren Oates stars as a down on his luck bartender/piano player working in a Mexican bar. He has little musical talent and LOTS of crabs. So much for the first third of the movie.
A wealthy Mexican Landowner has put out a reward on the life of Alfredo Garcia, a scoundrel who has knocked up the Landowner’s daughter and headed for parts unknown.
The rest of the movie concerns locating Alfredo (he’s already dead), removing his head and getting it back to the Baron for a huge payday. The action and drama comes in trying to hold onto the ripe head long enough to collect the dinero.
This is pretty much a standard Peckinpah film with grit and a whole lot of grim going on as well.
